PETERSON PROFESSIONAL

Converting old popcorn ceilings to a new texture, the process begins with proper prep, including covering floors and walls with plastic sheeting to contain dust and debris. The popcorn texture is softened using water and a pump sprayer, then carefully scraped off with a wide drywall knife to avoid damaging the drywall underneath. For a knockdown texture, a thin layer of joint compound is sprayed using a texture hopper gun, then lightly troweled to create the desired pattern. For a flat, smooth ceiling, a skim coat of joint compound is applied in multiple thin layers using a 12”-14” drywall knife, ensuring even coverage. Once dry, the surface is sanded smooth with 120-220 grit sandpaper and primed with a high-quality drywall primer before applying ceiling paint for a fresh, updated look.
